A Swindon town centre site with an eye-catching roof was once a thriving hub of activity for shoppers and traders.

The Tented Market opened at the corner of Commercial Road and Farnsby Street in November 1994 to give a more modern home to a market that had existed in the area in some form or other since 1892.

The fairground-style design brings to mind traditional attractions which were often featured on market days.

Photos from the Adver archive show the iconic white folds of the roof being carefully constructed atop the glass and steel framework which surrounds the site.

After small local businesses set up shop inside the innovative indoor area, they welcomed crowds of customers who happily spent hours browsing their wares and picking up purchases.

We photographed stalls offering ceramic art, clothes, paintings, music, merchandise, and even didgeridoos, along with cafes, butchers and barbers.

Fun events marked the market's first, second, fifth, and 10th birthdays, though fears of a potential closure in 2005 prompted protests from many of the 53 traders.

The market closed for two years until new owners took charge and reopened it.

August 2017 saw the last day of trading after developers got the green light from Swindon Borough Council to start the planning of a new 11-storey construction which has yet to appear.

Some businesses relocated elsewhere but several other entrepreneurs had to close down for good.
