A well-known Swindon artist has donated one of his paintings to Prospect Hospice as a way of thanking them for the care they gave to his brother.
Ken White's 83-year-old sibling Michael spent his final days at the Wroughton hospice surrounded by loved ones including his wife Susan and their daughters Caroline, Victoria, and Anna.
In a touching tribute to the staff's efforts, Ken gifted one of his artworks from 2019 which depicts a sunset above the canal as it once flowed along Fleming Way.
He, Susan and Anna looked on as the painting was revealed in its new home on Monday afternoon, with four family photos placed alongside it.
Anna said: "He was the kindest and most patient dad you could ever have, a gentle giant who was very loving and loved nature and animals.
"This keeps him immortal, it's a legacy.
"He was so unwell and suffering so much and we were all fighting to get the best care for him, so we felt lucky to get a bed for him here because we knew we could stop worrying and everything would be taken care of.
"Prospect were amazing, I never imagined the way it would be - in a positive way, like walking into a paradise.
"They were so kind and thoughtful, we could just relax and be with Dad, which we had not been able to do for years.
"We laughed a lot, we played one of his old songs which he recognised and responded to, we had permission to just be.
"It was a special way to say goodbye that took away our fear of death and gave us a safe place for our emotions to come out.
Michael worked on the railways with his brother for a few years and enjoyed keeping fit and active by winning medals for swimming and cycling, even proudly managing 40 push-ups in his late 70s.
Susan said: "Ken and I looked through the studio and this painting stood out, we were thrilled to donate it to Prospect.
"It's very moving to know that it will be here in Michael's memory. He was very precious."
Prospect Hospice is currently seeking to fill a £1 million funding gap that is putting a strain on its services and future at risk. To donate or copy a letter template to your local MP asking for support, visit www.prospect-hospice.net
CEO Jeremy Lune said: “We are incredibly grateful to the White family for this extraordinary gift and absolutely overjoyed.
"Their generosity will bring comfort and inspiration to patients, families, and staff for years to come.
"There was laughter among the tears, they could joke and share food together in a suitable environment that allowed them to have as normal a family routine as possible.
"When I moved to Swindon, one of the things I really loved was the murals. Ken White is a local treasure and one of the many things we are proud of in this town.
"Art tells stories, brightens the place up, and conveys things that people struggle to do in words.
"The light and the colours of the painting are really wonderful, the skies of
"Ken celebrates the heritage of the town and has been part of it for so long. We are part of the community and he is a big part of the community, too, so there's a lovely synergy to it."
Ken is renowned for his work creating murals that turn urban spaces into vibrant canvases, and he came up with the iconic design of the Virgin Atlantic Scarlet Lady that has adorned aircraft all over the world.
