Plans for a new development near Swindon that will see eight homes knocked down before being turned into 24 have caused outrage among residents being told to move out.
The newest GreenSquareAccord development is set to be built on The Rosary in Royal Wootton Bassett, and the housing association says it will provide the area with much-needed affordable homes.
But in order to demolish and rebuild, several of the residents currently living in 30-33 and 42-45 of The Rosary will be temporarily moved out.
Although no formal planning application has been submitted to Wiltshire Council yet, GreenSquareAccord consultations have already caused concern among affected residents.
"My mum is nearly 80 and she has lived in the house for 58 years but will be moved out," said one Bassett local, who did not want her or her mother to be named.
"The first she heard of it was when some people came knocking on the door telling her the house was being pulled down and they were going to build on the land.
"Apparently she was sent a letter which didn’t arrive prior to this visit.
"GreenSquareAccord has said it will find somewhere for her to go and she can come back to one of the new houses if she wishes, but I personally think it is disgusting that they are moving tenants out of the houses in the first place."
The development is still in the very early stages of consultation, and GreenSquareAccord has welcomed the public's opinion which will help shape the planning application.
According to current estimates, the application will be submitted to Wiltshire Council in the autumn and if all goes smoothly then work could start from March 2025.
A spokesperson for GreenSquareAccord said: “We are committed to providing quality, energy-efficient affordable homes within Wiltshire both for our existing customers and future customers who are seeking affordable accommodation in the region.
“We are in the process of developing proposals that would see eight homes on the Rosary in Royal Wooton Bassett replaced with up to 24 new affordable homes built using modern methods of construction, ensuring they are energy efficient and fit for the future.
“We have communicated our proposed plan to impacted customers, local residents and elected representatives, and we are supporting our customers who are affected by this proposed development."
"If the proposals proceed and once construction is complete, impacted customers will be given the opportunity to return to one of the newly built homes.”
