Wiltshire Police has sent a reassuring message to the Swindon public as concerns grow over potential riots.

As riots and disorder continue to spread around the UK with several gatherings planned for tonight, online speculation suggests that disorder could be coming to Swindon.

Multiple town centre businesses including Carfax Medical Centre have sent home staff or closed early as a result of the potential disorder.

Wiltshire Police has now acknowledged it is aware of the online speculation and is prepared to take action where necessary.

Although the chief executive of Swindon Borough Council, Samantha Mowbray, described the threat level of a violent protest in Swindon as "a medium threat," additional resources are being put in place just in case.

“We are aware that there are a very limited number of social media posts which are causing some understandable concern in our communities," said Chief Superintendant Phil Staynings.

"Wiltshire Police will continue to monitor and provide reassurance with a high visibility policing footprint across key locations in the County.

"Currently we have not seen any tension or disruption in Swindon or Wiltshire and we are continuing to engage and reassure our communities. This of course is being kept under constant review.

"Wiltshire Police does have contingency plans in place and anyone identified as engaging in disorder will be met with the full force of the law.

"We will not hesitate to take robust action against a small minority who are intent on being involved in criminal activity."
