A major A-road near Wiltshire has closed until spring 2025, sparking concerns about traffic in the county.

The A36 Warminster Road has closed between Wiltshire and Bath, at Limpley Stoke, and will remain shut to motorists for months.

This closure began on Monday, August 12, to allow National Highways engineers to carry out major works.

The project will see the stabilisation of the southbound embankment following cracking alongside the carriageway.

Drivers travelling between Wiltshire and Bath are expected to face significant delays in the meantime.

Concerns have also been raised about how the closure will impact traffic on Wiltshire roads, with the official diversion route taking motorists on the A4 and A350 past Corsham, Chippenham, Melksham, Trowbridge, Westbury, and Warminster.

It is expected that other towns in the area, like Bradford on Avon, will also be used as shortcuts.

Hugh Campbell, senior project manager for National Highways, said: “Safety is our number one priority and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but need to fix the root of the problem to ensure it doesn’t happen again and that motorists and pedestrians remain safe at all times.

“We understand that road closures are frustrating, but by fully closing the road, we can get this scheme done safely and quickly, causing less disruption overall.”
