National Highways has warned drivers in and around Swindon to expect delays during a month of A419 closures.

Both the A419 and the A417 will be hit by closures over five consecutive weekends, between the end of August and the end of September.

The work will begin with the closure of the A417 northbound between the Burford Road interchange and Quarry Interchange, starting Friday, August 30.

Closures will then begin to move south towards Swindon and Wiltshire.

The closures most likely to affect motorists in the county will start on Friday, September 20, between the Lady Lane junction at Blunsdon and Spine Road, and on Friday, September 27, between Turnpike Junction in Swindon and Spine Road.

Drivers using the key route to travel between Swindon and Cirencester should also be aware of earlier weekend closures.

The project will allow engineers to carry out essential maintenance and National Highways emphasised that this work is vital to keep the concrete carriageway safe and reliable.

Service manager Sarah Lewis said: “Safety is our number one priority, and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but we need to carry out these essential repairs to ensure the long-term maintenance and safety of the carriageway.  

“We understand that road closures are frustrating, but by fully closing the road, we can get this essential repair work done safely and quickly, causing less disruption overall.  

“Once it's all complete, these improvements will benefit road users and the local community for many years to come.” 

Advanced signage will be in place to warn of the closures and allow users to plan their journeys. 

National Highways added there will be no disruption during daytime hours on weekdays, with both routes set to be fully operational outside of the works.

Diversion routes will be signed and National Highways is working with Wiltshire Council and Swindon Borough Council to keep disruption as minimal as possible.

  • Friday, September 13 to Monday, September 16 - A419 Closure between Burford Road Interchange and Spine Road Junction southbound. 
  • Friday, September 20 to Monday, September 23 - A419 Closure between Spine Road Junction and Lady Lane Junction Southbound.
  • Friday, September 27 to Monday, September 30 - A419 Closure between Turnpike Junction and Spine Road Junction.
