A man who admits damaging a Swindon working men’s club and using or threatening violence will go to trial

Robert Kemp, 55, pleaded guilty earlier in the year to affray and criminal damage.

He damaged a fence at The Purton Club, a working men’s club just outside Swindon, and on the same day, May 31, 2021, “used or threatened unlawful violence towards other[s]”.

He is being held in HMP Berwyn, and appeared at Swindon Crown Court on August 16 via video link.

The intention of the hearing was to sentence Kemp for the offences committed more than three years ago.

However, the sentencing was adjourned due to him being unrepresented by a solicitor, despite wanting representation.

The prosecution expressed the desire to sentence Kemp as soon as possible, given the age of the offences.

However, Judge Jason Taylor KC said that according to the court of appeal, defendants are entitled to an adjournment if they are unrepresented, yet desire defence representation.

The Purton Club, on Station Road, Purton, is described on its website as “the local club in Purton just on the outskirts of Swindon. Friendly atmosphere, live music”.
