The leader of a major construction company operating across the South West has died, aged 91.

Alan Beard was born on November 3, 1932, and joined his father and grandfather's construction company Beard when he was just 17 years old.

He then spent seven decades dedicating his life to the growth of the company, based in Faraday Road.

Becoming managing director and taking over from his father Geoffrey in 1971, he steered the company through many economic and political challenges and helped grow the company turnover to £200 million.

Alan was the third generation family member to stand at the helm of the business, and lifelong commitment clearly ran in his blood as his grandfather and company founder, Edward William Beard, worked until he was 103.

After retiring from Beard Construction in 2021, Alan Beard died peacefully at home on August 11, 2024, aged 91.

He has been remembered by his family, friends and all who knew him as a 'highly respected figure'.

“Alan Beard was a true professional," said Professor Roger Flanagan, former president of the Chartered Institute of Building.

"He was caring and helped many people on their career path. He was humble and concerned for other people.

"His legacy is a beacon for others to follow; always do your best and exceed your own and the client’s expectations. He will be sadly missed.”

Chad Murrin, former Beard non-executive director, added: “As head of the company, Alan resolutely appointed apprentices and mentored them as they progressed their careers within Beard and the wider construction industry."

"He was ahead of his time in his approach to developing technically competent construction managers."

Under Alan's leadership, Beard helped build many high-profile projects, including The Bishop Edward King Chapel at Cuddesdon, as well as projects with the prestigious University of Oxford, Eton College, Marlborough College and Wellington College.

The award-winning company now boasts a £180 million turnover and operates in Swindon, Oxford, Bristol, Guildford and Southampton.

Outside of work, Alan was keenly involved in the Rotary International and an active member of his local church.

He leaves behind his wife Eileen, sons Mark and John, six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Alan Beard's funeral and celebration of life will be held on Friday, August 23, and further details can be found from sharon.brace@beardconstruction.co.uk.
