The owners of the soon-to-be-reopened Kenzo 72 have said huge public reaction to its closure has led to a planned reopening.

Business partners Kamil Singh and Sukman Limbu, who also run Kaizen Burger in Regent Street, had purchased Kenzo 72 from its previous owners and after closing the restaurant in its former home in Godwin Court were going to open a slightly different business.

The public's outcry of disappointment that the popular eatery would no longer be available led to the pair reversing course - which is what ultimately led to the announcement it would be returning to Wood Street in the same building as where nightclub The Bank currently is.

Kamil, 25, said: "Kenzo wasn’t coming back, it's only coming back because of the public. There was so much interaction after the closure announcement that we thought we needed to bring it back, and this was the best way."

Kamil added that The Bank will not be going anywhere, with both businesses operating from the building going forward.

"The Bank will stay as it is with the nightclub feel to it, and the restaurant will run throughout the week and weekends with an earlier finish.

"Kenzo will be open 7 days a week and will, hopefully, offer one of the best Sunday roasts," he added.

"We're going to have a really exciting new night for ladies in Swindon which we hope will draw in quite a big crowd by replicating that sophisticated feel-good London atmosphere."

Those who are already missing Kenzo 72's iconic hot stone plates will not be disappointed either as they are definitely returning.

"Yes, the hot stones are back," Kamil said, "We will be doing them, but also doing some bigger cuts and more shareable plates, we'll be adding a porterhouse and adding a tomahawk, as well as weekly specials, local butchers specials, all fresh, locally sourced."

He added: "But the aim is for everything to be better, we want to improve the quality of the food that people remember from Kenzo, we want to enhance the flavour.

"Take the Tokyo Chicken for example (another popular menu item from the previous Kenzo), we want to add more seasoning to it, add some more flavour. It will taste like the old Kenzo, but it will be something new and fresh at the same time."

There will be a private hire space for functions and events which can cater to up to 100 people, and there will also be shisha available so people can 'dine, drink, have fun, smoke some shisha all in one'.

Kenzo 72 will reopen on Thursday, September 5, and it is currently taking bookings on its website at kenzo72.com/swindon/.

Kamil said: "This is a new opportunity for anyone who was a previous customer of Kenzo to come here, see the change for the better, and enjoy the quality of the food."

When asked what he planned to do with the former Kenzo 72 building in Godwin Court, Kamil kept his cards close to his chest.

He did say that plans were in motion for that site, and he hoped to be able to share more about it later on this year.

When it initially closed, a spokesperson for Kenzo 72 said: "Kenzo 72 is closing its doors for a short period of time. We have decided that it’s time for the next chapter.

"We would like to thank everyone who has supported us throughout the years, this is not goodbye, it’s see you later!

"We will be back with a fresh new look and some tasty new treats!"
