A Swindon resident has been fined £1,000 for fly-tipping a box full of domestic waste on the side of the road.
The offender, who cannot be named as they admitted to the incident and paid a fixed penalty notice, dumped the rubbish on a verge between Royal Wootton Bassett and Hook.
They claimed that they had pulled into the side of the road to tidy the inside of their car, placed the box on the ground, and failed to put it back in the vehicle before driving away.
This sparked an investigation by Wiltshire Council’s Environmental Enforcement Officers who tracked down the source of the fly-tip.
Nick Holder, cabinet member for highways and street scene, said: “We have a zero-tolerance approach to fly-tipping in Wiltshire and our message is that if you fly-tip you will be caught and prosecuted.
“This is the fourth fixed penalty notice we have issued at the new rate of £1,000 and we hope this increase shows people how serious we are about fly-tipping.
“If anyone spots fly-tipping in the county, I’d urge them to report it to us using MyWilts.
“They could receive a reward of up to £200 in gift vouchers if the information they provide leads to a prosecution, or a fixed penalty being paid.”
