Road closures are set to hit a busy route in Swindon before over a month of roadworks are completed.

Since July, lane closures have been in place on Barnfield Bridge along Great Western Way as Swindon Borough Council attempts to waterproof the route.

This project is nearing completion but several nights of road closures are scheduled before construction on the carriageway is finished.

This will begin on Friday, August 30, when the bridge deck will be resurfaced.

A council spokesperson said: “Ongoing work to waterproof Barnfield Bridge on Great Western Way is nearing completion.

“On Friday (August 30) Great Western Way, between Meads roundabout and the roundabout with Barnfield Road, will be closed overnight from 8pm until 6am in both directions to allow the bridge deck to be resurfaced.

“Signed diversions will be in place and access will be maintained for local residents living in Meadow Road, Pasture Close and Wayside Close.”

Following this, the eastbound carriageway will be shut for several nights while the works are completed.

A spokesperson added: “To complete the scheme, both lanes of the eastbound carriageway of Great Western Way will be closed for three consecutive nights from Monday (September 2) to enable further patching and white lining work to take place.

“Both lanes of the westbound carriageway will remain open.”
