A serious crash has closed a main road through Wiltshire.

The A361 has been shut in both directions between Broad Hinton and Winterbourne Monkton.

The closure was put in place on Friday morning and police advised that it would continue for "the foreseeable future" due to a road traffic collision.

At 9.45am, a Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: "Drivers please be aware that the A4361 at Winterbourne Monkton north of Avebury is currently closed in both directions following a serious road traffic collision.

"The road is likely to be closed for the foreseeable future.

"Please find alternate routes."

At around 12pm, a police car parked near the junction with Summers Road and the Hackpen White Horse blocked the way forward while an officer spoke to motorists travelling to Avebury from Swindon and advised them on diversion routes.

Currently, the A316 in this area is blocked by cones and signage. No time estimate has been given as to when the road may reopen.

Traffic is flowing smoothly despite the closure, with the only slight delays occurring when vehicles slow down upon noticing the blocked-off stretch of tarmac and drivers pause to consider which junction to turn onto to reach their destination.
