A motorcyclist has died in a crash on a main road through Wiltshire.

Officers responded to calls from the A4361 near Winterbourne Monkton at around 8am, when a Kawasaki motorcycle travelling northbound collided head-on with a Ford Transit Custom travelling in the opposite direction.

The rider of the motorcycle, a man in his 50s, was declared dead at the scene.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: "His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this sad time.

"The driver of the van was uninjured. The road remains closed while enquiries are carried out.

"Any witnesses to the collision or anyone who may have dash cam are asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 01225 694597 quoting log number 49 of today’s date.

"Alternatively, they can contact the team directly at SCIT@wiltshire.police.uk"

At around 12pm, a police car parked near the junction with Summers Road by Broad Town and the Hackpen White Horse blocked the way forward while an officer spoke to motorists travelling to Avebury from Swindon and advised them on diversion routes.

The A4361 in this area was blocked off by cones and signage until the closure shortened at around 3pm before the road fully reopened by 5pm.
