Almost 8,000 potentially tyre-bursting potholes have been filled in so far this year in Swindon

But, the local authority has been keen to stress that although it is doing everything it can to make the town's roads as safe to drive on as possible, the scale of the issue is huge.

Since January this year, 7,891 potholes have been repaired across the Borough. That includes 328 in August.

Of these, 314 were fixed within five working days of being reported, 286 were identified by the council's team of five highway inspectors who regularly check 522 miles of Swindon’s roads and all 646 miles of paths/pavements and 76 miles of cycle paths.

48 of these repairs were reported by residents, of which 28 were in criteria for a repair.

A Swindon Borough Council spokesperson said: "Here in Swindon, it would take an estimated £142 million to get all the roads to a ‘like new’ condition.

"However in practice, our limited resources mean we’ve budgeted just over £4 million in 2024/25 for proactive road resurfacing work and allocated another £2 million to day-to-day highways maintenance, including reactive pothole repairs (£170,000) but also all other maintenance work related to roads, pavements and cycle paths.
