Heavy rain and possible flooding could hit Swindon and Wiltshire as a yellow weather warning is due to activate this evening.

The weather warning lasts from 9pm today, September 4, until midnight of Friday, September 6.

The Met Office warns of heavy rain becoming more extensive on Wednesday night and especially Thursday, with some flooding impacts.

Where heavy downpours occur, 20-40 mm are possible within an hour or two. Over a longer period a few places could see more than 50-60 mm, possibly even as much as 80 to 100 mm if repeated batches of heavy rain affect the same locations.

On Friday, it says heavy rain may lead to some travel disruption and flooding. The warning covers much of southern England and Wales.

Rainfall totals of 15-30 mm are expected widely on Friday, however, the wettest areas are likely to see 40-60 mm through the whole of Friday with a lower likelihood of a few areas seeing as much as 75-100 mm.

Knock-on effects could include power cuts, flooding of businesses and homes and damage to buildings.

Transport could also be affected with a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services and spray and flooding leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.
