Over 2,000 employees in Swindon are set to receive a pay rise after a significant investment in staff.

Amazon has announced that it will increase its minimum starting pay to over £28,000 per year for frontline operations employees across the UK.

This means that in towns like Swindon, which has a large Amazon site just off the A420 as well as a smaller delivery station, more than 2,000 employees will see a rise from £13 per hour to £14.50.

Not only is this a 9.8 per cent increase on minimum starting pay this year, but it also marks a 35 per cent increase since 2022.

The pay rise is set to come into force on September 29 and will affect all full-time, part-time, temporary and seasonal roles.

“Our frontline employees across the UK Operations network are a huge part of the success of our business and we appreciate everything they do to deliver for our customers," said Amazon UK country manager John Boumphrey.

"That's why we're proud to announce that we're increasing our minimum starting pay for all frontline employees to the equivalent of more than £28,000 a year.

"We continue to offer industry-leading benefits from day one, as well as outstanding opportunities for our employees to start and grow a great career."

Amazon's £400 million Swindon warehouse, near Gablecross Police Station just off the A420, has only been up and running in the town for two years, but has already given jobs to thousands of locals.

When the plans for the building were first put in, developer Panattoni said it could bring more than 1,000 jobs to Swindon, but this has been doubled.

Previous leader of Swindon Borough Council David Rennard said: "Swindon is a great place to do business with a very capable workforce as well as being a great place to work, live and play. "

Since 2022, Amazon has also invested £550 million in increased pay for its operations employees.

On top of this, all employees are offered a comprehensive benefits package including private medical insurance, life assurance, income protection, subsidized meals, skills development courses and an employee discount.

According to Amazon, these benefits are worth more than £700 annually, and employees can also take advantage of a company pension plan.
