A Swindon fried chicken shop has been fined for hiring illegal workers after a visit from immigration officers.

Tennessee Chicken at 10 Victoria Road, Swindon, was fined £15,000 according to an August 31 report.

From August 18 to 24 the Immigration Enforcement teams carried out a week of action against businesses suspected of employing illegal workers following a promised crackdown by the Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper.

The UK Visas and Immigration and Immigration Enforcement arms of the Home Office then prosecuted the business leading to the fine.

According to Companies House, Nk-Unique Limited has overdue accounts and confirmation statements, with an active proposal for the company to be closed down.

Naweed Khan is listed as the sole “businessman” at the company and since 2023 has directed a new company with up-to-date accounts called Tennessee Ltd.

Naweed Khan could not be contacted for comment. However, a manager at the Victoria Road branch denied knowledge of the fine and illegal workers.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “In many cases, illegal workers live in squalid conditions on-site, earn far below the UK national minimum wage, work longer hours than legally allowed and may have entered the UK illegally, overstayed their visas or arrived under visitor conditions.”
