A Highworth takeaway has reopened after the owners returned from holiday to find it had flooded and the roof had collapsed.
Sammy’s Chinese Takeaway closed on August 19 while scenes of devastation were repaired in the kitchen, with rubble on the floor and water dripping through the roof.
The company has been sharing regular updates, and less than a month later the family-run takeaway serving Chinese, Thai & Malaysian Cuisine is open once again.
A spokesperson said: “Fresh and clean inside kitchen and outside counter, we are ready to serve you!
“Warm reminder, we will reopen tomorrow 10th September (Tuesday) 4:30pm. See you tomorrow.”
The family had returned from a week-long holiday to find the kitchen completely different to how they had left it with water leaking through the ceiling of the kitchen from above at several points.
A section of the ceiling had also collapsed and the kitchen itself was also starting to flood with a visible build-up of water.
A spokesperson said at the time: It said: "Heartbreak Notice. Because the kitchen roof collapsed due to water leakage, we are TEMPORARILY CLOSED for Kitchen Renovation until further notice.
"We apologise for any disappointment or inconvenience this may cause. We will be back soon."
The closure could not have come at a worse time, not only to ruin a holiday but also because Sammy’s recently introduced a new menu in March 2024.
They were understandably keen to reopen as soon as possible and shared regular updates throughout the works.
When a skip was delivered to clear out the debris, the business estimated the works would take three weeks - a target its ended up beating.
They said: “On the first day of construction, everything was cleared. The wall is still very wet and must be dehumidified before proceeding to the next step.”
The business kept their own and their customers’ spirits up throughout the works by sharing tips and tricks on delicious Chinese cookery.
They then said: “The ceiling and walls have been plastered, and the walls can be tiled tomorrow. The construction team is really awesome.”
Once the renovation was complete it was time for the kitchen to be cleaned and the appliances to be returned..
A spokesperson said: “We have missed you all and look forward to seeing you soon.”
The high-rated takeaway has 4.7 stars on Google and 4 on Tripadvisor, with a five-star food hygiene rating.
