The Environment Agency is investigating “potential pollution” after many fish were killed in a Wiltshire town’s lake.

Royal Wootton Bassett residents were left “horrified” after multiple fish were spotted floating dead on the water at Jubilee Lake on Thursday, September 5.

At the time, the town council issued a statement confirming that oxygen levels had dropped in the water, and walkers were urged to keep their dogs away from the lake.

The town council has since released an update provided by the Environment Agency, confirming that an investigation is ongoing.

A spokesperson said: “We have attended Jubilee Lake and are collaborating with partners and local businesses to investigate the source of any potential pollution and prevent any further impacts.

“We are continuing to support the Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council with their operational response through the provision of technical advice and guidance, and aeration equipment to protect the environment.”

Those visiting the area when the problem was first reported described a “very bad smell coming from the lake and through the wooded area”.

Some also claimed to see “dead fish being put into black bin liners” at the nature reserve just off Brinkworth Road.
