Leisure centres across Swindon are hosting free activities to mark National Fitness Day 2024.

The Better leisure centres initiative, which is now in its 13th year, is part of a nationwide effort by UKActive to promote the benefits of an active lifestyle.

This year's theme is 'Your Health is Your Life', highlighting the positive impact of physical activity on both mental and physical health, as well as its role in fostering social connections.

On Wednesday, September 18, Croft Sports Centre, Delta Tennis Centre, Dorcan Better Health and Recreation Centre, Haydon Centre and Gym, and Link Centre will be hosting free activities.

These include free access to gyms, swimming sessions (including Swim for All, Swim for Fitness, and Aqua-aerobics), and fitness classes such as Tai Chi, Pilates, Group Cycle, and Dance Fitness.

This year, the focus is particularly on the benefits of swimming and water-based activities for mental and physical health, including rehabilitation.

At Haydon Leisure Centre, expert 'Swim Doctor' Cheryl Pottinger will be available from 12pm to 3pm for consultations.

These are aimed at anyone looking to start swimming, return to the pool after a long break, or use water-based activities to improve their health.

Barnaby Rich, Swindon Partnership Manager for GLL, the charitable social enterprise that operates Better leisure centres in Swindon, said: "It has never been more important for the public to embrace activity and fitness as an aid to mental and physical health.

"So we are delighted to join this year’s National Fitness Day Campaign - Health is For Life - in our leisure centres, gyms, studios, and pools across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland with a host of free classes and activities for everyone.

"No matter your state of fitness, taking small steps to be more active more often will have huge benefits throughout your life – and that journey could start on National Fitness Day when you try something new."

In 2023, National Fitness Day saw the participation of an estimated 11 million people, including over four million children and young people.

This year, the organisers hope to see even more people getting involved.
