A person has been hit by a train in Swindon

Great Western Railway has cancelled all services between Swindon and Didcot parkway after a person was hit by a train on Thursday evening on the railway line near South Marston.

Wiltshire Police has warned drivers to expect "long delays" on the A420 between the turning for the Carpenter's Arms in South Marston and Shrivenham.

In a social media post, they advised motorists to "find alternative routes" while emergency services respond to the incident and traffic has been at a standstill since around 6pm.

A Great Western Railway spokesperson said: "It is with great sadness that we report a person has been struck by a train, leading to all lines being blocked. It is necessary to bring all trains in the affected area to an immediate stop.

"If you are onboard one of the services in this incident and are distressed by events, please do speak to a member of Train Crew for assistance.

"Alternatively, if you need to talk with someone privately the Samaritans offer a 24hr phone line available via 116 123.

"More information will follow as we have it.

"We are sorry for the delay to your journey."

The condition of the person, their gender or age is not known at this time.
