A bowls club left derelict since the coronavirus pandemic will be transformed into a “thriving” community hub.

Central Swindon North Parish Council (CSNPC) has chosen company ODS to turn Penhill Bowls Club into a “modern, multi-functional community building”, starting in September.

The club became the target of arson and vandalism since becoming vacant after the pandemic.

CSNPC councillor James Yeowell, community development committee chair, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that the derelict Penhill Bowls Club is finally getting its much-deserved overhaul into a multipurpose community building that the people of Penhill can use as an important local activities and social hub.

“Along with the forthcoming skate park installation, this development will be a major asset for Penhill residents.”

Mitchell Carter, Head of Construction at ODS, said: "Winning this tender is a testament to our commitment to delivering high-quality construction projects that serve the needs of local communities.

"We are excited to transform the Penhill Bowls Club into a space that will foster community spirit and provide a venue for a wide range of activities and events."

CSNPC was recently given the green light to lay hard standing on the old bowling green and transfer skate equipment there from the Oasis Leisure Centre.

Additionally, the interior of the building will be fully restored to ensure it meets modern standards for safety and usability.

To fund the new facility, the parish council has secured £145,000 in capital & £20,000 in revenue funding to support the project.

The “community hub” will offer spaces for meetings, recreational activities, and social gatherings, “addressing a vital need within the Penhill area”, said a parish council spokesperson.

But, the council also wants to hear from local people about what sort of things, the hub should be used for.

The parish council spokesperson added: "We’re currently engaging with local schools and young people to gather their input on activities, but we need more ideas on what sort of activities can take place when we open. Do you have any ideas?

"You’re invited to a public engagement session on 22 October 2024 between 4-6pm at John Moulton Hall to look at plans and give your feedback. There will also be a formal presentation at 5.30pm from our youth team.
