More than 200 Swindon primary school pupils have joined a dance education project.

The Royal Ballet School’s Primary Steps programme kick off its 19th year with a special day of ballet demonstrations in Swindon on September 20 for 216 young people aged 7-8.

Year 3 pupils from five Swindon primary schools are gathering at the Wyvern Theatre today for a rare opportunity to see the artistry and athleticism of ballet students.

The pupils will have the chance to experience ballet for themselves by performing on stage.

Teachers and musicians from The Royal Ballet School, along with pre-professional Royal Ballet School students and younger students from the nationwide Junior Associate Programme, are involved.

The Royal Ballet School partnered with Swindon Dance for the programme involving Lainesmead Primary, Lawn Primary, Lethbridge Primary, Mountford Manor Primary, and Tregoze Primary.

The pupils will spend the next five weeks working with Royal Ballet School teachers, discovering ballet through a series of creative dance workshops.

At the end of the five-week course, 28 pupils from each area will be invited to join weekly Primary Steps classes for up to four years.

The programme is funded by the Department for Education in England and the Hodge Foundation in Wales.
