A weather warning for Swindon and Wiltshire has been upgraded from yellow to amber as heavy rain continues to batter the county.

An amber warning means a higher likelihood of higher-impact weather.

The Met Office reports: “Heavy rain is expected to produce some flooding and travel disruption.”

This disruption is already being experienced, with multiple major roads across the county being affected by reported flooding.

The AA warns that the B3098 Westbury Road near Coulston, A345 Marlborough Road near Pewsey.

The Met Office warns: “It seems likely that some areas will see 60-80 mm and a few places may receive 120mm or more. Travel disruption and some flooding is likely.  

“Lightning may be an additional hazard in places. 

“As well as this Amber warning, a Yellow warning for heavy rain is valid until the end of Monday.

The Met Office warning highlights various dangers and risks to people:

  • Spray and flooding probably leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Homes and businesses may be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • Delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely
  • A possibility that some communities will be cut off by flooded roads
  • Power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses likely

Meanwhile, a flood warning has been issued through Swindon as levels rise on the River Cole and Dorcan Brook.

Flood warning signs have been erected on Queens Drive, a common site of flooding.
