An underpass in Swindon which flooded to a dangerous level has now been completely drained in less than 24 hours.

The Haydon Wick underpass just off Westfield Way is a common access route to get to Haydon Leigh Primary School.

But when heavy rainfall and mass flooding hit the town on Monday, September 23, the underpass resembled more of a 'pool' as it became submerged in approximately five feet of murky water.

One passerby, who shared photos of the submerged underpass, described it as a serious safety concern, stating: "If someone slides down the bank into the water and cannot swim they will have a hard time getting out."

Others pointed out that the water level in the underpass, which is used frequently by school children, was above the average child's head height.

The footpath was closed shortly afterwards by Swindon Borough Council.

However, it remains closed to the public as of Tuesday morning.

Queen’s Park lake has also been sectioned off due to flooding overnight causing green algae to overflow from the lake.

Piper's Way, which was impassable on Monday due to water reaching the top of cars' tyres, has now been reopened to the public.
