I would forgive a lot about a pizza costing £2.50 - probably the cheapest full-size pizza you can get in Swindon.

Any complaint you had could reasonably be answered that it cost you less than £3, so be quiet and enjoy your food.

But the cheap pizzas at The Fox and Hounds in Wroughton promise to not just be pizzas, but stonebaked with homemade dough and sauce. They claim to be everything a regular pizza is but for a quarter of the price. The Fox and Hounds in Wroughton may sell the cheapest pizza in Swindon (Image: Newsquest)

“How can they be that cheap?”, is everyone’s first question - so I called James Moloney who owns the pub to find out.

First, he reassures me that the savings are not from scrimping - the pub has invested in a pizza oven to cook the dough his two Italian chefs prepare daily.

It comes down to how they are made and how many are made.

“We make it from scratch. We don’t have to buy in bases or jars of sauce”, James said explaining that a homemade product is not only fresher but also keeps supply costs down. The doner meat was tasty despite not tasting like a doner(Image: Newsquest)

Secondly, given the popularity and number of pizzas they are making they can get special deals with their suppliers, equalling further savings.

You can also get pasta instead of pizza, and looking at the menu you can guess that only selling one pasta shape may help keep costs down on that side too.

All this leaves James with a small slice for himself, but he admits that most of the profit comes from the sides and drinks people buy alongside their pizza.

So apart from the practicalities, how do they taste?

My curiosity could not resist a chicken doner kebab topped pizza, with fresh green peppers, chicken and tomato sauce.

This was very tasty and the fresh vegetables gave a welcome crunch to the slices, although I admit it did not taste much like a doner. Still, it satisfied my curiosity as well as my hunger.

But me and my friend agreed she made the better choice with a meatball topping; whole meatballs with plenty of cheese.(Image: Newsquest)

I ended up eating most of hers, evidence of the full-size potions being enough to be too much for some.

I enjoyed my food and looking around so were many others - cheap pizza is a great equaliser, drawing young and old, families and dates alike.

The deal runs every Monday, and James says booking is recommended following an “amazing” response - suggesting there may be more than just novelty drawing people to The Fox.
