Surveys have been done for a possible new supermarket in Swindon, with the Advertiser receiving information as to its identity.

Workmen were spotted by a resident carrying out a survey at the site of disused barns in Wroughton.

The resident was told it was for a possible new Lidl store at the site with Wroughton having already been hinted as a desirable site by Lidl.

An official source confirmed with the Advertiser that while there are no firm plans, the budget supermarket chain is exploring options to bring a store to the area.

Wroughton was featured on a “wish list” of new locations published by Lidl in May where the business said it was interested in opening a store.

Richard Taylor, Lidl GB Chief Development Officer, said at the time: “We’re planning to open hundreds of new Lidl stores but ultimately see no ceiling on our ambition or growth potential.

“This is why we’re continuing to invest in new locations whilst exploring innovative routes to expansion.

“As we look ahead, we’re excited to welcome even more new shoppers to our existing stores, as well as those we’re planning to open across the country in the coming months and years.”
