Fire crews were called to the Link Centre in Swindon after “unprecedented” rainfall caused flooding.

The West Swindon leisure centre was battered by heavy rain over the last week and on Monday, September 23, floodwater was able to get inside the building.

Fire crews were called as a precaution after water entered the venue’s plant room, but the facility remained open despite this and a repeat of the devastation caused last September was avoided.

Water later receded after one fire crew from Westlea responded to “reports of flooding”.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed firefighters used a mini ejector pump and three main jets to prevent water from rising and gave advice to monitor the water level.

The GLL Better-operated centre was closed for months last year after suffering extensive flood damage.

A spokesperson for the Link Centre said: “Due to the unprecedented levels of rainfall we experienced on Monday, there was water ingress into the plant room at The Link Centre.

“As a precautionary measure and to support the Centre’s own flood defence measures the fire brigade attended the site on Monday afternoon.

“Fortunately, by Monday evening water levels began to recede.

“The leisure centre remained open throughout and activities remained unaffected.”
