A person has died on the railway line in Swindon after emergency services rushed to the scene.

Just after 1pm on Thursday, September 26, the British Transport Police and the Great Western Ambulance Service rushed to the railway line in Swindon after reports of a casualty on the tracks.

The incident caused almost five hours of disruption, with trains between Swindon and Didcot being cancelled, delayed and diverted.

Police would later confirm that despite the attendance of paramedics the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: "We were called to an area of the line in Swindon at around 1.10pm following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Officers attended along with paramedics but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

This marks the third death on the railway lines near Swindon in the past seven days.

Trains from Swindon Rail Station continue to face delays which are expected to continue until at least 5.30pm, and Great Western Railway has asked that passengers take alternative transport where possible.

"We're working with Network Rail and the emergency services to deal with an incident between Swindon and Didcot Parkway as sensitively, quickly and safely as possible," said a spokesperson for Great Western Railway.
