Drivers in a four-vehicle crash on the M4 motorway have had a lucky escape with no injuries reported.

The crash between junctions 16 and 17 near Wootton Bassett shortly before 8am caused heavy delays as a lane of the westbound M4 was closed.

Images from highway cameras showed an ambulance in the coned-off first lane of the motorway.

The South Western Ambulance Service has since confirmed that one ambulance was sent to the scene shortly after police responded.

Fortunately, on this occasion, it was not required as there were no injuries, as well as no arrests.(Image: National Highways)

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “At around 7.55am this morning we responded to a four-vehicle RTC [road traffic collision] on the M4 between junction 16 and 17.

“There were no reported injuries and no arrests made.”

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 08:02hrs on Thursday 26 September to a road traffic collision near Royal Wotton Basset.

"We sent one double-crewed land ambulance, an operation officer, and a first responder to the scene.”
