A construction worker from Swindon had two awkward dates in the most recent series of Channel 4’s First Dates.

Clinton Lovett, 33, featured on episode two of series 22 of the popular show, filmed at The Botanist restaurant in Bath.

In the episode, lifelong friends Emma and Dani were both looking to meet someone special and were introduced to Joe, a wildlife documentary maker from Bristol, who Emma gravitated towards.

Meanwhile, Dani, 34, from Salisbury, was introduced to Clinton, who told her his favourite hobby is mountain biking and he was diagnosed with celiac disease seven years ago after his throat closed up when he ate a Hob Nob biscuit.

As the pair were seated at their table, Dani asked again if he had any other hobbies, to which he replied “not really” and failed to ask her any questions or initiate conversation.

Following several awkward attempts at conversation, Dani suggested swapping tables with Emma, who seemed to be getting on well with her date, but she agreed.

She told Clinton she enjoyed going on holidays, but he replied saying he could never commit to the time off work and asked if he had anything in his teeth.

Later Emma said to Dani in the bathroom “Your date doesn’t ask a single question” and the friends said they would rather date each other, while deciding to swap back again.

In an attempt to impress Dani, he balanced a chair on his chin, while Emma called it the “biggest ick” and Dani told the crew “When the chair hit that chin I was like no”. proceeding to ask Clinton about the things he would find unattractive in a partner.

During an interview with the production crew following the date, Clinton said: “I wasn’t feeling 100 per cent about the date going well, you have to keep them interested so I was a bit unsure about when to bring the party trick in, or if I should do it at all, but anything to impress my date.”

After splitting the bill, the pair were asked if they would like to see each other again.

“Do you mind if I go first”, Dani said. “You are a lovely man but I just don’t feel that romantic vibe.”

“I’d love to have seen you again”, Clinton replied.

Dani added: “I think by the end of the date it was flowing a bit better but I felt like at the beginning you didn’t ask me very many questions.”

Clinton told her she threw him off because she is “pretty” and perhaps that was why he was unable to “concentrate” on getting to know her.
