Swindon’s own The Voice UK singer has shared the ‘insane’ routine and wisdom of Sir Tom Jones.
Billy Hughes of Billy and Louie chose Tom Jones out of all the judges on the ITV show to mentor them for the next round.
The 21-year-old singer is now passing on his pearls of wisdom and delighting children at various Swindon schools through singing lessons.
Billy said: “Sir Tom Jones has had an absolute wealth of knowledge. He's worked with everybody under the sun and if the kids can benefit from that, then amazing.”
This includes tips on getting into the music industry for kids curious about that career as well as vocal advice.
Billy recalled: “His warm-ups are the best things ever because he doesn't warm up at all, he sort of just rocks up, puts in a cough sweet and sort of starts singing. It's insane.
“One thing he's definitely shown us so far is just that he's used every opportunity that has been given to him.
“Whenever there’s been an opportunity he’s just taken it. That’s one thing that I think I have taken away from my experience with him so far and one thing I think I will continue to impart to the children and teach.”
Billy has joined the Swindon Music Co-operative based on Victoria Road, a not-for-profit association of over 40 self-employed specialist music teachers, as a singing teacher.
It provides instrumental and vocal tuition to both schoolchildren and others, with Billy teaching in Commonweal, The Deanery, Millbrook and Wroughton Junior.
He said: “The voice experience has helped with that perspective of entering into the industry. I feel a bit more now I've got a whole wealth of experience of this industry.
“I can sort of impart that to the kids I’m teaching as well at the moment.”
He added: “We've got an incredible music scene, but it's not like London where opportunities are sort of everywhere.
“So if you've got an opportunity no matter how big or small to absolutely take it instantly because you don’t know where it's going to lead.”
Billy is still being mentored by Sir Tom, preparing him and his twin brother Louie for the next round, the battle phase, where coaches mentor and develop two of their artists against each other.
Billy and Louie had their pick of the judges after all of them turned their chairs to face them indicating they would like to train the twins, but Sir Tom was picked due to his experience.
