A busy doctor's surgery was left without power for several hours after workers carrying out roadworks cut a cable.
Doctors at New Court Surgery in Royal Wootton Bassett found themselves plunged into darkness on Thursday afternoon, October 3, when a power cut hit the Boroughfields area.
The sudden loss of power meant that all phone lines for the surgery went down and staff were unable to access computer systems with key documentation and information.
Shortly after the power cut, New Court Surgery revealed that workers carrying out gas works on the roads nearby had "accidentally cut through power cables," causing the outage.
"Please be aware we currently have a power cut due to the road works," said a spokesperson for New Court Surgery at the time of the power cut.
"They have accidentally cut through power cables. Therefore we have no phone lines or access to our computer systems.
"Please ring 999 in an emergency or 111 for advice."
Roadworks mapping website One Network reports that gas works are currently being carried out in the area by Wales and West Utilities which began on Tuesday, September 3, and are set to continue until Monday, October 28.
This incident is believed to have taken place just after midday and power remained off until Thursday evening.
Wales & West Utilities Programme Controller for Swindon, Craig Sperring, said: “We are working in The Lawns area of Royal Wootton Bassett to upgrade the gas network.
"This work is essential to keep the gas flowing safely to heat and power local homes and businesses and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport greener gas in the future.
“Yesterday afternoon (October 3), while we were working, our equipment accidentally damaged an electrical wire running alongside our gas main.
"We immediately called the electricity network who came and made a repair.
“We are sorry for any inconvenience that our work, or the electrical repair may have caused.
"We know working on busy roads like this is not ideal, but the work really is essential to keep the gas flowing."
