A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued by the Met Office as Swindon residents prepare for a wet and windy week.

The weather warning has been put in place across South West England and South Wales from 4pm on Monday, October 7 until Midnight.

The Met Office is predicting "heavy showers and thunderstorms which may cause some disruption, particularly to travel, later on Monday."

Travel times are likely to be affected due to spray, standing water and potential hail on the roads, and forecasters have warned that some flooding of homes and businesses is possible.

Closer to the coast, the Met Office has warned of damage to buildings and structures from lightning strikes, hail and gusty winds, but in Swindon this is likely to see an increase in power cuts and possible delays to train services.

"Areas of heavy showers and thunderstorms will move northwards across southern parts of England and Wales later Monday, clearing northwards overnight," said a spokesperson for the Met Office.

"Some places will see 20-30 mm of rain within two to three hours, with a small chance that a few places could receive 40 mm.

"Thunderstorms are most likely for south-facing coastal districts, and hail and some strong gusts of wind could accompany the heaviest showers and thunderstorms."

Swindon residents have been warned to prepare a flood plan if they live in a property that is prone to flooding, and to check road conditions before driving.
