A Swindon restaurant has been fined thousands by immigration enforcement for hiring an illegal worker.

Bangel Dinning Ltd at Roughmoor Village Centre, Peatmoor, was fined £15,000 for the employment of one individual without the right to work in the UK.

It shares an address with Bengal Square, an Indian restaurant.

The company has overdue accounts from April 2024, and there is an active proposal to have the business struck off.

A second business, Dean Mark Porter at Trecastle Road, was £20,000 for the employment of two people without a right to work in the UK.

Neither could be contacted for comment.

It comes after two other Swindon food establishments, a chicken shop and a newsagent, were fined for the same reasons.

Tennessee Chicken on Victoria Road was fined £15,000 and AAA Shop of Cricklade Road was fined £10,000.

The owner of AAA Shop said that the fine was issued in error after immigration officers mistook someone without a visa visiting his shop for an employee.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “We are determined to clamp down both on illegal working and the exploitative treatment of illegal workers.

“Vulnerable individuals can find themselves trapped in unsafe and insecure conditions, facing exploitation and even modern-day slavery, often facilitated by organised criminal gangs.”
