Regent Circus Cineworld has been pictured empty after it closed permanently.

Movie-lovers saw their last ever movie in the Swindon town centre site cinema on October 6, with it closing after the last film ended, and never reopening.

The closure is one of five “commercially unviable” Cineworld sites shut in the UK as part of a plan to bring the struggling cinema chain back into profit.

The closure leaves Nando’s and Boom Battle Bar as the only occupiers at Regent Circus, which opened in 2014 and has since been put up for sale.

No more films are listed for showing at the cinema on the website though a branch remains open at Shaw Ridge.

A spokesperson for the cinema chain said: "Thank you for sharing the magic of the big screen with us here at Swindon Regent Circus.

"Your passion for film has meant the world to us. Keep the love for movies alive and we hope to welcome you back to one of our nearby Cineworld cinemas soon.

"From all of us at Cineworld Swindon, thank you for being part of the adventure."

Customers received an email thanking them for their custom and instead inviting them to the west Swindon branch.

It is understood a consultation process was started with employees at the six affected cinemas who were offered redeployment at nearby sites.

A Cineworld spokesperson said: “We are implementing a Restructuring Plan that will provide our company with a strong platform to return our business to profitability, attract further investment from the Group, and ensure a sustainable long-term future for Cineworld in the UK.”
