More than 10,000 families have had to renew their mortgages at higher rates, Swindon Labour has claimed.

The party has blamed Liz Truss' mini-budget for the impact on the 10,684 families.

The analysis, derived from Bank of England and ONS data, highlights the aftermath of the Conservative mini-budget on the second anniversary of its introduction.

The budget caused the economy to crash, leading to soaring interest rates.

Commenting on the analysis, Swindon Labour's Kevin Small said: "Never forget what these Conservatives did to our country, our living standards, or our public services.

"In the two years since the disastrous mini-budget, thousands of local families have been forced to renew their mortgage on to much higher rates – leaving them hundreds of pounds a month worse off."

At the recent Conservative Party Conference, former Prime Minister Mrs Truss received a warm reception as she claimed she should have been allowed more time in office.

Mr Small addressed this, saying: "The rapturous applause Liz Truss received at the Tory Party Conference this week tells you everything you need to know about what that party has learnt since they crashed the British economy – absolutely nothing.

"It’s all just a game to them, but for working people in Swindon this is about being able to make ends meet at the end of the month."

He added: “Labour is fixing the foundations of the British economy to get our country moving again to deliver growth and make working people better off.

"Change has already begun – but it’s going to take time thanks to the terrible mess the Tories left us in.”
