Motorists have been advised to take extra care during the heavy rainfall which has caused flooding in Swindon and Wiltshire.
Flooding has already been seen in parts of Swindon, including the Coate Water roundabout and Queens Drive, and motorists have been caught out on Hullavington Road in wider Wiltshire.
There were delays of up to an hour on the M4 eastbound between junction 18 Tomarton and junction 17 Chippenham on Tuesday morning due to a car crashing into the central reservation.
One of three lanes was closed and traffic was queuing between Bristol and Chippenham while the barrier was repaired, with traffic returning to normal just before 12:30pm.
David Britton, National Highways' South West Operations Manager, said: "Keeping our roads safe for drivers during difficult weather conditions is a major part of our work and our teams are dealing with several weather-related incidents in the region.
"In the meantime, we advise people to check on the weather conditions, plan and allow extra time for their journeys.
"If it’s time for your wipers, it’s time to slow down. The roads will be more slippery than usual, so give yourself more time to react – increase the gap between you and the vehicle in front to at least four seconds
“Drivers should look out for standing water, slow their speed and adjust their driving before and after encountering any.”
