A hit show starring Swindon's most famous actress has been cancelled without reason by streaming giant Netflix.

The dark comedy series Kaos, which stars Jeff Goldblum in the lead role and Swindon-star Billie Piper who appears as Cassandra, drew in 14.9 million views in its first season.

But less than three months after the show aired, Kaos has now been abruptly axed by Netflix, which confirmed the actors would not return for another season.

The series is a clever re-imagining of Greek mythology that explores themes of gender politics and power in the underworld, under the reign of an almighty but paranoid Zeus.

According to Forbes, Kaos ranked number 3 on Netflix’s English-language TV chart and accumulated approximately 98.9 million hours viewed.

The show’s final episode was even left open-ended with several storylines unresolved to leave space for the planned three seasons.

No reason has been given by Netflix as to why the series was axed.

Aurora Perrineau, who played Eurydice aka Riddy, the wife of Orpheus in the series, confirmed the cancellation in a now-deleted Instagram post.

She wrote: “Well… this one hurts. I find explaining how I’m feeling to be really difficult, but I’ll try,” she began her lengthy post.

“When I started auditioning for this show, I knew it was special, mainly due to the fact that Charlie Covell’s scripts resonated with me in a way most things hadn’t.

"I knew all of these people, and I loved them all – every flaw, everything.”

Perrineau added that she was “really proud” of herself and the cast and crew, saying “every single person involved was a heavy hitter”.

“I can’t believe I got to do this with all of you. We made something weird, dark, hilarious, deranged and absolutely tragic – something entirely human. This is a feeling I plan to take with me.”

Swindon-born and bred actress and singer Billie Piper, who is best known for her previous roles as Rose Tyler in Doctor Who, has yet to comment on the show's axing.

Sharing some behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram when Kaos first aired, she said: "The Gods are f***ing mental. Come and watch our show, out now on Netflix."
