Staff and students at a Polish school in Swindon have celebrated their 70-year milestone with exhibitions, photos and films.

The Maria Konopnicka Polish School, based at the Holy Cross School on Queens Drive, officially opened in 1954 with eight pupils studying native Polish subjects, increasing to 20 the following year and reaching around 250 pupils this year.

It was named after Maria Konopnicka who was a poet, novelist, children’s writer and activist for Women’s rights and Polish Independence and pupils, teachers and guests were able to learn more about the history of the school at the celebration last month in September.

Swindon South MP Heidi Alexander called it a "privilege" to join the celebration.

Heidi said: "The polish community has been an important part of life in Swindon since the Second World War and it’s so good to see the Saturday school go from strength to strength, educating the next generation and keeping language and traditions alive."

Teacher Joanna Brejna explained: “The school currently accommodates and teaches children from preschool up to preparation for GCSE and A levels by qualified, creative and passionate people as well as introducing children to a world of joy, success and indeed their Polish identity and culture which is the school mission.

“It’s very much at the heart of the Polish Community with input from the many other Polish organisations including the Seniors Club, Scouts and parents’ organisations.

“The school itself is also involved in the Polish Community as well as many external projects which include the Polish Day in Swindon and the national Polish Heritage days initiative.

“I wish to mention a very special person who has made all this possible through her selfless dedication and passion to make the school what it is today, Ewa Hawrylo, who is the current Head and Director of the school.

“Her energy, passion and ability to connect and work with people enables the school to move forward as well as her ability to motivate and support both pupils and staff. She spreads optimism and nothing is impossible for her.

“We are all proud to be part of this school and look forward to many future achievements and anniversaries.”

In 1965 the Polish School moved to the Polish Community Centre and conditions were greatly improved, allowing for further expansion.

In 2015 the school was made independent and in 2019 formed into a charity named the Educational and Cultural Centre Swindon CIO.
