A resident has called for signage to prevent HGVs using a narrow street after “repeated damage” to cars and buildings.

A highways improvement request has been made calling for large vehicles to stop using Union Road in Chippenham.

The narrow street, which leads onto the busy A420 New Road from Old Road and the railway station, can easily become congested.

Plans have already been lodged to make the route a one-way street and these plans remain under consideration by the council.

Now a request has been made for signage warning the road is “unsuitable for HGVs” after an incident last month in which a car was reportedly damaged.

The request said: “HGVs are often sent down Union Road in Chippenham as their satnavs use it as a suggested route, however it is a very narrow street and the large vehicles have caused repeated damage to the buildings, and business signs as they try to navigate the tight corners.

“The latest incident took place on Friday, September 13, where an HGV hit a parked vehicle when trying to turn from Union Road onto New Road.”

The request will be considered by town councillors at a planning committee meeting on Thursday, October 24.

If they support the plan, it will be forwarded to the Local Highways and Footpaths Improvement Group for consideration.
