Swindon Carers Centre is seeking to recruit people who can help plan its future goals after securing funding for the next year.

In August, the charity reached an agreement with Swindon Borough Council and Bath and North East Somerset Swindon and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board for it to provide interim care services in the town throughout 2025.

This followed fears that the centre would have to cease operations by the end of 2024 due to difficulties in renewing its funding agreement with the local authority.

Now that the Swindon Carers Centre’s future is secured, the team is seeking people who would like to join its board of trustees.

It is looking for people with experience in finance and accounting, fundraising, media and communications, income diversification or digital skills to become trustees.

Experience of caring or an understanding of the issues faced by unpaid carers is also desirable.

Chief executive officer Susanna Jones said: “Our Board of Trustees plays a key role in the strategic development of the charity ensuring the rights of unpaid carers are at the heart of our work and that their needs are championed with health and social care decision makers.

“We are succession planning as three longstanding, experienced trustees will reach the end of their maximum terms by the middle of next year and recruiting now will give time for a smooth handover.

“Becoming a trustee adds incredible value to charities like Swindon Carers Centre and it can also be a great opportunity to develop your own personal and professional development.

“Our team of staff and volunteers are passionate about supporting unpaid carers and we’d like to hear from people who are interested in becoming a trustee and making a difference to the lives of unpaid carers.”

The charity aims to create a community where carers in Swindon are recognised, valued and supported so their wellbeing can be improved.

Vice-chair of trustees, Nina Czajikowski, added: “Being a trustee is extremely rewarding and I feel very grateful to be part of such an incredible organisation. I am able to put my professional skills to use as well as learn new ones.”

Neil Steptoe has been a trustee since 2021 after the company he worked for supported Swindon Carers Centre.

He said: “At Swindon Carers Centre I feel part of a great team that is doing something benefitting thousands of people within the local community.”
