An electrical fire under a Swindon road has led to power cuts around Swindon.

The outage on Thornhill Drive in St Andrews Ridge was first reported at around 11.30am on Saturday.

One fire engine briefly blocked the road as a cordon was put in place while a crew of firefighters investigated a drain that appeared to be scorched.

The emergency vehicle left the area at around 12pm as Scottish and Southern Electricity Engineers began work to sort out the safety issue, which is expected to be resolved by 11.30pm.

A witness shared on social media: "Electricity mains appeared to be arcing causing fire and smoke to come out of the access in the path.

An SSEN spokesperson added: "We have had to isolate your power due to a safety concern on our network.

"Where possible, we will always try to keep your power on but there are situations like this where we need to isolate power to keep people safe.

"There is no concern for safety at your property, however there is an isolated issue elsewhere that our teams need to make safe before they can turn your power back on.
