For years the Science Museum held much of its collection behind closed doors and somewhat in secret up at Wroughton airfield.

But now the institution has opened up a new collection of more than 300,000 objects in what it calls the Science and Innovation Centre in a custom-built facility named the Hawking Building.

And it wants people to know where it is.

Science Museum Group, which includes the centre, the main museum in London and the National Railway Museum in York, has applied to be able to put up signs at the centre to welcome visitors.

(Image: Science Museum Group) The group’s application says the sign will be four meters long and 1.8 metres high and bear the words Science + Innovation Park.

It will be placed outside what will be the ‘Welcome Building’ at the entrance to the site and the application says: “The proposed sign has been designed to reflect the character of the wider area, including the approved Welcome Building.

“It utilises materials which are in use, or have been approved for use, elsewhere in the site and the colour scheme will complement the character of the wider area.

“The size of the sign has been carefully selected so that it will ensure that the entrance to the site is legible, including details of other businesses within the site so that visitors can be sure that they are in the right place.”
