Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue has issued a statement after responding to a tragic incident at a care home that has left three dead.

Crews from the fire service which covers Swindon and Wiltshire, as well as Dorset, were called to Gainsborough Care Home in Swanage on the morning of Wednesday, October 23.

Four fire crews from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue, two crews from neighbouring Hampshire and Isle of Wight, Dorset police, South West Ambulance Service and other emergency services were also present.

As well as the three people found dead - two men aged 74 and 9, as well as an 86-year-old woman - seven others were taken to hospital.

The care home has said in an update that it is fully cooperating with lead agencies and is “deeply saddened” by the incident.

The circumstances surrounding what happened are still being investigated but a woman in her 60s has been arrested and subsequently released.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue's area manager Darren Langdown said: "Firstly, I would like to express our shock and sadness at what has happened here today, and our thoughts and condolences are very much with all those affected.

"We have had a number of crews on the scene since eight o’clock this morning, supporting the investigation. This has included specialist support from our colleagues in Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. "
