Having driven on the busy Croft Road many times, you may not suspect that it is home to a “grand” period home over 250 years old.
Dating from 1748, 1 Croft Road must feel a world away from the bustle of the busy road and surrounding Old Town - all of which can presumably be viewed from the balcony.
It has come up for sale for £1,400,000 with Fine and Country, who extol it as a “handsome, Grade II listed detached residence… subject of a sympathetic and authentic refurbishment”.
The house was described as a project by the previous owners, who have refurbed it into an “impressive family home that incorporates all the necessities of modern day living whilst preserving the charm and character of the original period”.
They said: “We were looking for a project, which this certainly was! Now, after 7 years of refurbishment, it has become a beautiful home which we are very proud of.”

They added: “We fell in love with the house predominantly due to the history and character that it offers, whilst being so centrally located.
“When you are in the rear garden you could quite easily be in the middle of the countryside yet walk out the front door and you are a 5 minute walk from the bustling heart of Old Town.”

They say that the size of the garden, at 0.4 acres, is uncommon for a house only 20 minutes walk from the train station. The agent even suggests a pool could be squeezed into the garden.
The house has seven beds, four baths and six reception rooms which the sellers say would make it “perfect for a large family given the quantity of bedrooms”.
However, out of all the rooms, their favourite is the kitchen.
They say: “It’s a very sociable space with a large central island, which is great for groups to gather around.

“It has direct access to the sunny kitchen garden, perfect for your morning coffee in the warmer months.
“It is also a lovely cosy space in the winter with the Aga and Iglenook woodburner.”
The sellers also have a positive on surrounding Swindon, comparing Old Town to “many other thriving historical centres in other towns and cities, such as Clifton, in Bristol”.
As well as the main house is a two-bedroom annexe with private entrance - offering “superb staff accommodation”!
