Swindon’s Bus Company has urged passengers to ensure they are visible at bus stops as the evenings darken.

The company stressed this is particularly important in rural areas where many bus stops are not lit.

They advised passengers to shine a light onto the road, being careful not to aim it at the driver’s eyes.

This comes as the clocks are set to go back this month, resulting in more journeys being made in the dark.

Swindon’s Bus Company head of communications, Nikki Honer, said: "Not all bus stops in this region are lit - especially the ones in more rural areas.

"Passengers who are wearing dark clothes and standing still whilst waiting for their bus may not be seen by our drivers."

She added that many people have a torch on their phones and encouraged passengers to use them.

However, Ms Honer acknowledged that not everyone is able to make themselves visible in this way.

"Our drivers will still pay extra attention to help ensure customers are able to board during the darker mornings and evenings," she said.

Swindon’s Bus Company customers are reminded that the clocks will go back on Sunday, October 27.
