Smoke was billowing from a car engulfed in flames on the motorway near Oxfordshire.
The vehicle fire happened this afternoon (October 27) on the M40 northbound between junction five (Stokenchurch) and junction six (Watlington).
One lane was closed with emergency services in attendance, causing major delays for those driving into Oxfordshire.
One motorist, who we have not named, told the Oxford Mail: "People had gotten out of theirs cars as the queue was so long.
"Fire and police were at the scene when I drove past. Hope everyone was Ok."
Another Oxfordshire eyewitness said: "The traffic is so far back, so avoid. Miles of tailbacks at standstill."
The lane has since reopened and traffic flow has resumed to normal.
