A man was carried by air ambulance to the hospital while fighting for his life following a fire in a residential street.

Further details have been confirmed following the fire in Thornbridge Avenue, Swindon on Saturday, October 26.

It resulted in a man in his 50s being taken to Great Western Hospital by air ambulance with “serious life-threatening injuries”, according to Wiltshire Police which erected a cordon while investigation work was carried out.(Image: Newsquest)

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: "We attended reports of a fire in Thornbridge Avenue, Swindon, yesterday evening (26/10) to support our emergency services colleagues.

"A man in his 50s was taken to hospital with serious life-threatening injuries.

"Officers put a cordon at the address while investigation work is carried out."

The fire happened in a shed and was serious enough for all three core emergency services to be called along with the air ambulance.

A Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were called to Thornbridge Avenue, Park South, Swindon at 5.44pm on Saturday (26 October) for a fire in a shed and two crews attended, from Stratton and Swindon. 

“One casualty was handed into the care of the ambulance service and our stop was at 6.41pm.”

A South Western Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 17:45hrs on Saturday 26 October to an incident in Swindon. 

“We sent two double-crewed land ambulances, an air ambulance, and an operations officer to the scene. We conveyed one patient by air ambulance to Great Western Hospital.”

Authorities could not comment on the status of the patient. As of the morning of October 28, the police cordon had been dismantled.
