Swindon Half Marathon is set to return to the streets for the first time in six years, after years of financial struggle.

With new years resolutions less than two months away, it might be time to download the coach to 5k app and get running, as the date for Swindon Half Marathon's return has been confirmed.

The Swindon Half drew in more than 2,000 runners to the town when it was last held in 2019, but has struggled to get off the ground ever since.

There was no half marathon in 2020, due to Covid-19 pandemic social distancing guidelines, and the 2021 event which was due to be put on by management company The Race Organiser, was cancelled just 11 days before the race.

The company claims this was due to increased costs and a drop in entries and also promised in 2022 that the race would go ahead, but it never came to pass.

Now five years on from the last Swindon Half Marathon, sports event company Run Through has announced the race will return to the streets on Sunday, September 28, 2025.

This comes after negotiations with Swindon Borough Council that have been ongoing since January 2024.

(Image: Newsquest) Advertisement for the event, posted on domestic abuse charity First Light's website, states: "This half-marathon takes participants through Swindon and surrounding countryside, past the villages of Wanborough, Badbury and Medbourne.

"The closed road course is mostly flat for the first 5 miles, with miles 5-10 undulating before heading downhill towards the finish."

The half marathon is priced at £34 to enter, and registration are already open on the Let'sDoThis sports event website.

The price not only helps to pay for logistics such as road closures, but also includes a finisher's medal, refreshment stations, first aid stations, official event photography and marshals.

Runners will set off from Coate Water Country Park on Marlborough Road at 9am, and participants must be at least 17 years old to enter.

Councillor Jim Robbins, Leader of Swindon Borough Council, said: “It’s fantastic news that the 2025 race calendar will include a new half marathon in Swindon.

"We’re lucky to be surrounded by stunning countryside and runners will get to enjoy it on a closed road course that starts and finishes at the impressive setting of Coate Water Country Park.

"No doubt there’ll be strong interest from runners across the region keen to experience this brand new event.”
